5 Physiotherapy Exercises For Back Pains

Back pains can be nasty. Usually when we experience back pain, the first advice that comes hurling our way is to stay in bed and take rest. But against the popular belief, there are certain exercises which help in relieving back pain. Here are the top five:

1.       Aerobic exercise- Strengthening your heart, lungs and muscles, aerobic exercises like swimming, running, cycling etc also help to relieve back pain.

2.       Partial crunches- These are an excellent way to strengthen your back and stomach muscles. It is important that you first start off with small sessions (6-8 times) and then increase your pace gradually (up to 15 crunches in one session).

3.       Knee to chest-   Lie on your back, with knees bent so that your feet fall flat on the surface. Lift one knee up and bring it as close to your chest as you can without lifting your lower back from the floor. Hold for 20-30 minutes and repeat 2-4 times for each leg.

4.       Lift some weight- Done correctly; lifting weights helps relieve patients of their chronic back problems. However, you should always consult your professional physiotherapist Edinburgh about the selection of weights suitable for your condition.

5.       Wall sits- Stand close to a wall and leaning back touch your back to the wall surface. Now slowly slide down the wall till your knees are bent in a sitting position. Hold for a few seconds and slowly slide back up. Repeat 5-6 times.

Depending on the cause of your back pains and the severity of the condition, your physiotherapist would advise and recommend you which general exercises to implement and which ones to avoid. Always take professional advice before starting on any new exercise regimen.
